Tips for Moving

Send Change of Address to:

Post office.
Charge accounts and credit card companies.
Publications (several weeks notice is required).
Friends, relatives, neighbors, landlord.
Insurance companies: Life, Health, Auto, Dwelling, etc.
Utility companies: Electric, Water, Propane, Sewer, Telephone, Cable and Oil. Get refund of any deposits made.
Paper carrier, laundry, and other services. Arrange for new or continued deliveries and discontinue old services.
Banks and financial institutions.

Don’t Forget To:

Empty freezer, plan use of foods, defrost freezer-refrigerator, and have appliances serviced for moving.
Clean rugs and clothing before moving; have them properly wrapped.
Check with your moving company: Insurance coverage, unpacking labor costs, arrival date, shipping papers needed, boxes, method and time expected for payment.
Plan for a cleaning service to come in after the move to clean the house you are leaving.
Plan for transporting cars or other vehicles.
Plan for transporting and feeding pets and children; they are poor traveling companions if they are unhappy.
Check pet immunizations and requirements to avoid quarantine.

On Moving Day - especially for long trips:

Carry currency, jewelry and documents yourself, or send by registered mail. Carry traveler's checks for quick, available funds.
Let close friend or relative know your route and schedule, including overnight stops, if any. Ask that person to act as your message headquarters.
Double check closets, drawers, garage shelves, attic and basement to be sure they are empty.
Leave all keys and garage door openers for the new owner with your real estate or escrow agent. Get your new keys.
Leave all instruction booklets and warranties for appliances and fixtures.
Leave house and property clean and free of trash, lumber, paint cans, or other debris.
Try to relax and enjoy the adventure.
